Whistler holds a special place in the hearts of the people who live, work, and play here, and for our resort community visitors. As Host Mountain Resort for the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, 2010 has been a defining year for our community.
In the years leading up to the Games and during the Games, residents had an opportunity to get involved with and shape Whistler's role, then to experience the energy and excitement of the Games, and to welcome the world. The Games provided us with an unprecedented opportunity to showcase our community's successes, sincerity and soul.
Our goal is to keep this momentum going. Over the next year, the Resort Municipality of Whistler (RMOW) will be updating its Official Community Plan (OCP), a provincially mandated regulatory document that will shape Whistler's future as we mature inot a four season destination resort community with a sustainable tourism economy.
The OCP is a set of high-level plans and policies, such as land use designations that guide land use planning, social, economic and environmental policies, and civic infrastructure investments. Whistler residents are the key players in the Official Community Plan. Whether it's participating in Après in Action, an open house, an online discussion or community survey, we invite you to get involved in continuing to define and delineate Whistler's long-term success.
Whistler's OCP was last comprehensively updated in 1993, although amendments to the document have been made continually, and a vast amount of functional policy has been developed over the last two decades. Since 1993, Whistler has grown and matured as a resort community. During this time, the community has also developed Whistler2020, Whistler's comprehensive sustainability plan and vision: to be the premier mountain resort community - as we move toward sustainability.
The OCP doesn't replace Whistler 2020; the two documents work together. Whistler 2020 is Whistler's highest-level policy and guide for the OCP update. The OCP provides the regulatory framework for Whistler2020 policy and is one of the tools for implementing Whistler 2020 and formally protecting Whistler's vision.
Updating the Official Community Plan will shape our community post-Games. Together, we can move towards a sustainable future and thrive as a legendary mountain resort community.
