One of the ways to enjoy Whistler's resort experience is to slow down and change pace while taking in the beauty and energy of this community. Whistler's Village Stroll is a pedestrian walkway that winds through several focal points in the heart of the Village.
While locals always appear to know where they're going, finding the way around can be a journey for visitors, as the Village Stroll meanders and curves around storefronts and cafés, turns into plazas or wanders onto forest trails.
To make the exploration easier and more enjoyable, the Resort Municipality of Whistler, in collaboration with community partners, produced a suite of self-guided audio podcast tours, downloadable from the web, as part of a larger, improved wayfinding program.
With direction from the Whistler2020 Visitor Experience task force, the podcasts orient visitors, help them locate key destinations, tell Whistler stories to inform and entertain, and tailor the information for each visitor's needs, whether that requires a different language, barrier-free route or visual assistance.
Representatives of the Canadian Institute for the Blind, the Whistler Accessibility Committee, Village Host, Tourism Whistler and other stakeholders, pulled together to ensure the podcast experience was augmented with improved colour coded blade signs and banners, coordinating icon signs, station posts and colour coding on lamppost, and a printable tour map.
