Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS)

Olympic Broadcasting Services (OBS) was created by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in May 2001, marking a new era in the broadcasting of the Olympic Games. The IOC created OBS to serve as the Host Broadcaster for future Olympic Games starting with the 2008 Games. In Beijing, the on-site Host Broadcaster (Beijing Olympic Broadcasting) is a joint venture between OBS and the local Organizing Committee.

The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games mark the first time that the Host Broadcast will be solely an OBS operation.

The OBS team is responsible for the following areas of host broadcasting:

  • Providing management of all Olympic broadcasting while overseeing the broadcast operations in the Olympic cities
  • Developing a consistent approach across Olympic operations
  • Supplying a well-organized and streamlined approach to the successful television production of the Olympic Games
  • Furnishing specialized, state-of-the-art equipment
  • Ensuring that all IOC contractual obligations are fulfilled and broadcasters are satisfied
  • Optimizing resources to continually improve the efficiency of the Host Broadcaster operation

The OBS main offices are located in Madrid. For the Vancouver 2010 Games, OBS has created Olympic Broadcasting Services Vancouver (OBSV) as the on-site organization responsible for the day-to-day host broadcasting functions.
